Free Health Lectures in Melbourne

Rebecca Hunton, MD of Wellspring Medical Center in Melbourne is offering educational lectures free to the public. "Stress causes well over 75% of doctors office visits, weight gain, sleep problems and accelerated aging," explains Dr. Hunton. She will be addressing stress as well as Metabolic Syndrome and bioidentical hormones in her free presentations this month.

Metabolic Syndrome is the name for a cluster of conditions such as increased blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, abnormal cholesterol levels, and/or excess body fat around the waist that increase your chance for heart disease and other health problems such as diabetes and stroke. Dr. Hunton will explain the fundamental cause and introduce how to make healthy lifestyle changes to reverse the process.

"As men and women age they begin to notice a gradual loss of muscle mass and muscle strength, as well as mobility," states Dr. Hunton. "This condition, sarcopenia, even occurs in individuals who continue to exercise. Bioidentical hormone therapy combined with good nutrition and appropriate fitness programs can go a long way in countering the disability and frailty associated with sarcopenia."

Rebecca Hunton, M.D. offers Integrative Medicine featuring traditional and natural options. She is located at Wellspring Medical Center, 21 Suntree Place in Melbourne. Lectures are held on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please see event calendar for dates and times or for more information call 321-254-6816.

The Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act of 2009 (H. R. 646)

In January Congressman Maurice Hinchey of New York introduced HR 646, The Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act of 2009. Passage of HR 646 would amend Title XVIII of the Social Security Act to provide for coverage of qualified acupuncturist services under Part B (Supplementary Medical Insurance Benefits for the Aged and Disabled) of the Medicare Program. It would also amend Title 5 of the United States Code to provide for coverage of such services under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Passage of the bill would open the door for other insurance companies to cover acupuncture and enable greater access to this ancient healing art across the country.

The American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) is conducting a grassroots campaign asking for support in the passage of HR 646. The AAAOM is also lobbying for a companion bill to HR 646 to be introduced in the U.S. Senate.

The AAAOM asks HR 646 supporters to send a letter to their representatives by visiting www.RallyCongress.com/aaaom and clicking on "CONTACT CONGRESS." Fill in your ZIP code to identify your representative. The automated form letter can be sent as written or personalized.

Aromatherapy Workshops for Back to School

"Understanding and using the ABC’s of aromatherapy may help you and your student get ready for back to school," explains Doreen DeSerres, aromatherapist and owner of Nature’s Spirit. This month’s workshops will focus on the herbs that enhance learning, focusing, remembering and promoting good health. "For example, rosemary aids in memory recall and can be used for a wide range of ailments, including digestive disorders and arthritic complications," offers Doreen.

Since the expansion of Nature’s Spirit, Doreen is now crafting new herbal tisanes, an herbal fusion of different plant parts that historically have been used for holistic medicinal benefits. Each herbal tisane contains different properties. Doreen states, "some work to provide antioxidants and strengthen the body's immunity, while others promote calmness, reduce stress and balance our metabolism." Custom herbal tisanes are available.

Nature's Spirit is located at 405 Florida Avenue, Cocoa Village. Aromatherapy workshops are held on Wednesday evenings 6-8pm. Please call to reserve a seat. Drum circles are held on Tuesday evenings, 6-7:30pm. For more information call 321-632-1221 or visit www.naturespirit.com.

Stress and Anxiety Workshop for Parents

Susan Sawyer is presenting a two-hour Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) workshop for parents to learn how to teach this technique to their children. "EFT is a healing concept that has been in practice in Eastern medicine for over 5,000 years and is an easily learned tool that parents and children can use to get back in control of their lives," explains Susan. "The body's energy meridian points are stimulated by tapping on them with fingertips which brings relief without the use of drugs or equipment. Children with stress or anxiety may show symptoms such as withdrawal, insomnia, phobias, weight gain, etc. EFT provides relief from chronic pain, emotional problems, disorders, addictions, phobias, PTSD, and physical diseases." During this workshop, parents will be provided information showing how this technique works and a take-home workbook. Susan says another benefit is the "camaraderie from other parents searching for healthy treatment alternatives." Susan is a Board Certified Master Clinical Hypnotist and Certified EFT Trainer trained by EFT’s founder Gary Craig.

The workshop will be held Saturday, August 22 from 10am-12noon at 8059 Spyglass Hill Rd, Suite 101, Viera. $60 pre-payment required by Wednesday, August 19. For more information, call 432-7267or visit www.sawyerhypnosis.com.

Thai Massage in Cocoa

The Zen Room in Cocoa is now offering Thai Massage by Angela Logsdon. Thai Massage is done while the recipient is fully clothed, using no oils, while working on the floor with a mat. The therapist uses palm pressure, muscle stretching, and compression similar to classic yoga postures all done in a rhythmic movement of gentle rocking. Thai Massage enhances strength and flexibility, blood circulation, relaxes sore or tense muscles, and can recapture lost range of motion. "The best part is you get to just lie there and receive the stretching part of the massage," says Jessy, a recent recipient of Angela’s Thai massage. "This really helps you relax so you get a really good stretch."

Angela has been a massage therapist for six years and studied traditional Thai Massage in Thailand. She is available seven days a week by appointment and is excited to share the beauty of this practice at the studio.

The Zen Room is located at 631 Brevard Ave., Suite C, Cocoa. 60 minutes is $75; receive $25 off with a package of 3 massages. For more information, call 419-618-3668 or visit www.thezenroom.info.
