Natural NailSpa Now Open

The Natural NailSpa is a unique nail salon in North Brevard that offers complete hand and foot spa services for men and women. "We combine organic essential oils, fresh fruits and plant botanicals with quality innovative ingredients designed to nourish the skin and nail to promote cell renewal and stimulate growth of healthy cells," explains owner Denise Lomus. "We strive to improve the health of the hands and feet, not simply provide a cover-up." Every service is specifically designed for the unique needs of each client. "We don’t rush through any services," says Denise. "If there are areas that need special attention, we’ll spend extra time there. Whether you have dry skin, cracked heels, sweaty hands/feet or other issues, our services are designed to improve the integument of those areas with each treatment.

The Natural NailSpa practices stringent sanitation procedures, including hospital sterilization methods and single-use disposable files, pedicure tub liners and paraffin treatments to eliminate cross contamination. Their technician is a board certified pedorthist (C. Ped), an allied health professional trained in recognizing routine foot conditions such as fungal infections, plantar warts, ulcers and other skin and nail disorders. "While a C. Ped can not diagnose nor treat these conditions, she is the first point of contact in identifying those conditions that may need medical attention and can refer you to a podiatrist for treatment," explains Denise.

MD Introduces Laser Hair Removal

Lisa R. Anthony, MD, an internist in Sebastian, is pleased to offer laser hair removal services. "While I continue to provide internal medicine care to patients with medically complex problems, offering laser services has enhanced my practice allowing me to treat and improve the quality of life for patients’ whose goal of successive hair removal is achieved with predictable consistency," explains Dr. Anthony.

Laser works by delivering a pulse of energy is to the skin that extends to the base of the hair follicle and vascular supply, impeding growth and re-growth of unwanted hair. The pulse of energy is matched with a nearly simultaneous delivery of coolant to the same area, minimizing discomfort and protecting the skin. The ideal candidate for laser hair removal is a fairly light-skinned individual with medium to dark hair types.

Dr Anthony notes that her physician training is paramount in treating the patients. For example, she recalls a patient with abundant, coarse, dark facial hair who came for an initial consultation. She had already invested in prior treatments at another facility. Dr. Anthony felt she would help her best by declining laser treatment and directed her back to her medical doctor to discuss a possible change in her blood pressure medicine, minoxidil that actually stimulates hair growth. "Safety and great results are my main concern," expresses Dr. Anthony.

The Sebastian Laser Hair Removal Center is located at 13832 US1 in Sebastian. For more information call 772-581-0307.

Natural Awakenings Introduces Healthy Monday

Healthy Monday is a project of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in New York. As the Healthy Monday website says, "People plan their lives around the week, with Monday as the start. What if each and every Monday of every week became the day to start and sustain healthy behavior? Imagine what could happen if health organizations, government agencies, voluntary health groups, schools, businesses and individuals all came together to make Monday the start of a healthier life." The idea is to make Monday "the day all health breaks loose."

To support this movement Natural Awakenings is introducing a new section called Healthy Monday. In this section you will find local businesses offering Monday specials on products and services. "If you own a natural health business this is a great way to energize the community and grow your business at the same time," explains publisher Kris Urquhart. "We are introducing it for our Annual Healthy Yellow Pages special edition in September. This resource is the perfect place to launch your Healthy Monday campaign."

Workshop Teaches Parents Technique to Control Stress

The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is simple to learn and can assist your child to cope with many stressful issues and situations. Based on impressive studies by teams of physicians, mental health professionals, biological scientists and physicists, EFT has been shown to be effective for thousands of cases of people suffering from trauma, abuse, panic, anxiety, fears, social or school fears, addictive cravings, physical symptoms, pain relief, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, asthma, allergies, anorexia, bulimia, OCD, abandonment issues, grief and other related issues.

The premise behind EFT is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system. EFT is a derivative of ancient Chinese acupressure techniques; a series of tapping points on the body which follow the body’s energy meridians. When these points are maintained correctly, it is easier for children to focus their thoughts and feelings in appropriate ways and to rid themselves of unnecessary negative influences. By combining these tapping exercises with positive verbal affirmations, you can easily follow the shift in perception and watch as your child can help themselves regain control of their thoughts, feelings and lives.

On Friday, August 3rd from 2-4pm, Susan Sawyer BS, CMCHt, L.L.C., will be presenting a two hour workshop for parents to learn how to teach their children to use the Emotional Freedom Technique in the most effective way.

Seating for this workshop will be limited, and parents must pre-register and pre-pay to reserve their seat. Cost $50 includes a workbook. For reservations call 321-432-7267.

Synergy Health & Fitness Opens Spinning Center

Synergy Health & Fitness Studio, Inc., known for its personalized health and fitness programs, is home to Brevard County's only virtual reality spinning center. The studio, located at 2825 Business Center Blvd., Suite B9, in Melbourne, is opening the spinning center in a separate building within the same business complex, located off of Wickham Road near Home Depot.

"Spinning is a growing exercise phenomenon throughout the U.S. It’s very big in Brevard County but there are no virtual reality spinning centers in the area," said Synergy owner Dave Rivers, a personal fitness trainer with more than two decades of experience in health and wellness. "This center will expand our services to meet a need in the community."

Spinning is an indoor bike riding exercise program that integrates music, camaraderie and visualization in a complete mind/body exercise program. This intense workout focuses on the lower body, particularly on the quadriceps glutes, and hamstrings, but contributes to overall cardiovascular health.

A typical spinning class will last anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes. Depending on the intensity and duration of the "ride", participants usually burn 500 to 700 calories per class. There are no special skills or actual riding experience necessary.
