Weighted Vests Help Special Needs Students
The Incredible Horizons classroom has just verified Vandenburg’s research on a simple way to avert the need for medication for learning disabled children. VandenBerg's research study, published initially in The American Journal of Occupational Therapy (VandenBerg, N.L. (2001)) and more recently as Chapter 26 in Pediatric Issues in Occupational Therapy: A Compendium of Leading Scholarship (C. Royeen, 2004), demonstrates how the deep pressure of weighted vests can help improve focus and productivity.
In a classroom of children with special needs related to disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders, sensory processing disorder, ADD or hyperactivity, giftedness, dyslexia and hydrocephalus, the students were able to complete their entire day’s work in almost half the time.
Most children comment, "It feels good" when they put the weighted vest on. The central nervous system's sensory areas respond to deep pressure by producing a settling effect –which may be produced by increasing the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in some of the ways that medications work (VandenBerg, N.L. (2001)). Deep pressure, which activates receptors in the discriminative system, is also comforting and reassuring.
"I love solutions that actually help the brain function better for learning without the risks of medication that often have dangerous side effects. Plus our student body loves their vests" says Holly Fales MA. "The vested children are less hyperactive, more focused, better organized, less distracted, less frustrated, and read and write more efficiently."
Young children are particularly highly responsive to deep pressure, as their nervous systems are more plastic, however, even adults have demonstrated benefits from the use of deep pressure from the weighted vests.
Weighted vests can be purchased at the Incredible Horizon’s store at 674 N Wickham in Melbourne or online at IncredibleHorizons.com. Call 321-751-1313 for more information.
